The one meal I keep going back to for comfort is 'saambhar rice'.
I was about to make a full fledged dinner when somewhere in between I rid myself of that idea and ended up making saambhar.
I think it's the thick soupy stew full of veggies and lentils and the myriad of spices that draws me to it and drowning a bowlful of rice with ladles of saambhar and a knob of ghee is all that I need to get my nights rolling. Just the thing that the doctor ordered to drive away these Monday blues and get over the weekend binge that I subjected my body to.
All the excesses that my body soaked yesterday get ironed over with the nutritious and deliciously low calorie yet comforting saambhar.
I like making my own saambhar masala instead of the packed ones and I think that's what lends it that certain je ne sais quois.
It's got fenugreek, coriander seeds, garlic, red chilies and coconut roasted together and blended to a fine paste which is pushed into a simmering vat of cooked lentils and veggies spiced with aesofetida, turmeric and salt and then cooked again until all flavours have orgasmed to a satiated mingle and a final flourish of a fistful of curry leaves.
Ah curry leaves.
If I were Ceaser I'd have my crown adorned with a curry leaf wreath instead of an olive one.
There's nothing nearly as lovely and wonderful a herb as curry leaf.
Dinner..come to me..heal me..nourish me.
