Last night when Meera woke me up at 2:30 to go out I woke up cursing, annoyed at how early he needed to be out of the door.
Ugh! I'd said and moments after when I came back to bed I heard him meow again.
Come on! He'd been out for barely five minutes.
The rains were relentless and I knew he'd be soaking wet so I threw the covers once again and walked out of my darkly silent bedroom.
As I tip toed to the main door to let him out I saw a glow emanating from downstairs through my window.
Why someone was making a fire to remember their ancestors at this time was beyond me but even in my sleep it it bothered me how the fire wasn't outside someone's house happening in a small metal bucket but right outside the main gates of our building and every moment it was growing.
What the hell?
Adrenaline shot itself through my body and I opened the door to take a look see from the window outside of the house which offers a better look outside and there was a fire proper.
The neighbour upstairs had left his electric scooter on charge and the incessant rains had somehow got through the battery compartment and caused a spark of magnificent magnitude.
The scooter had caught fore was beginning to burn.
I saw the wire still attached to the electric unit downstairs and to yank the wire out was for me a thing of the moment.
Since this was so damn late at night there was literally nobody outside and there was a fire in front of my eyes, the flames for which were now leaping high and billowing disgusting plastic smoke. The flames were touching the second floor by now and the entrance to our buildings was blocked by a burning scooter.
Now what?
I'd heard Meera meowing and I was worried for him, and Gogi wasn't home. Two cats outside, a burning scooter, rains and everyone asleep and I was wearing just my night shirt!!
Damn it!
I ran upstairs to the top floor to wake up the owner of the now burning scooter and banged on his doors.
Then I ran back downstairs to my house and woke up people and told him about the fire.
We were dressed in no time and I was filling up a big tub of water while people ran down to see if the conflagration was entering the building.
By this time our neighbour from upstairs had come running down and now there were three of us trying to douse the flames.
A couple people did wake up and come out but promptly went back in upon seeing there were others to douse.
I looked around for a fire extinguisher but can you believe it there was none!
What a gross error on behalf of management but that wasn't the time to complain.
We were busy filling water in whatever large utensils we could find to throw on the flames and it took all of forty minutes of running up and down with tubs and vessels full of water to kill the fire that rendered that entire scooter no more than a metal skeleton covered in ash.
Once done I ran out looking for my cats and found them huddled under a car not far from the burning scooter .
My little babies.
I write this now as though it's not such a big deal but last night, I was shaking.
I was angry that people who did wake up didn't much help.
I was angry that there was no fire extinguisher when there should have been in a building.
I was angry that the neighbour downstairs whose house was right next to the burning scooter did nothing more than watch and return to his sleep when it could actually have been easier to source water from his house as opposed to houses on 2nd and 3rd floor.
A lot of things angered me but I'm glad that my cats were unhurt if a little scared.
I'm glad that I was awake at the right time.
I'm glad that better senses prevailed and there was no panic.
I am also glad that a big accident was averted because had the fires gotten any closer they'd have set fire to the building.
I am a officially afraid of fires and how helpless they can make someone and how long it takes to extinguish them.
This in short was my night.
I was finally able to sleep around 4 in the morning with all my cats in my bed.
And you?
(Misses)
